Abstract: Seeds of the genus Eugenia have high regenerative capacity, producing roots and shoots from seeds with reduced cotyledon matter. In addition, seeds of this genus regenerate new roots and shoots when the first roots and shoots are eliminated, and this characteristic is maintained even when the seed reserves are reduced by up to half. The aim of this study was to analyze the limits of new root and shoot regenerative capacity in whole and fractionated Eugenia candolleana seeds at different maturity stages. The regenerative capacity of seeds stored for six months was also evaluated. The seeds were sown; and when the first roots and shoots were produced, they were eliminated, simulating herbivory conditions. The results showed that the seed not only has high regenerative capacity at different maturity stages, but also that it maintains root regeneration when the seed is reduced by half, even after the storage period. Such information may indicate that seeds of the Eugenia genus can await the next crop season by regenerating several times as a way to withstand or tolerate predation. This ability can be understood as a propagation strategy of the species.

Resumo: Sementes do gênero Eugenia apresentam alta capacidade regenerativa, produzindo raízes e partes aéreas a partir de sementes que tiveram redução da massa cotiledonar. Também, foi observado, para sementes deste gênero, a regeneração de novas raízes e partes aéreas, quando as primeiras raízes e partes aéreas são eliminadas, ainda, tal característica se mantém quando a semente teve suas reservas reduzidas pela metade. Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar os limites das regenerações de novas raízes e partes aéreas em sementes inteiras e fracionadas de Eugenia candolleana, em diferentes estádios de maturação. Avaliou-se também, a capacidade regenerativa em sementes armazenadas por seis meses. As sementes foram semeadas e quando emitiram as primeiras raízes e partes aéreas, estas foram eliminadas, simulando uma condição de herbivoria. Os resultados mostraram que, além de apresentar alta capacidade regenerativa em diferentes estádios de maturação, a semente reduzida pela metade, a regeneração de raízes se manteve, inclusive após o período de armazenamento, tais informações podem indicar que sementes do gênero Eugenia são capazes de aguardar a próxima safra regenerando diversas vezes, como maneira de suportar ou tolerar a predação. Essa habilidade pode ser entendida como estratégia de propagação da espécie.

Plant relocation resulting from vegetation removal is an important conservation strategy. This work aimed to investigate the simultaneous relocation of the bromeliads Aechmea distichantha Lem. and Wittrockia cyathiformis (Vell.) Leme in epiphytic and terricolous form. These bromeliads were rescued from deforested areas due to the construction of a highway. Both were fixed onto tree trunks or pitchforks or in the soil in a Montane Dense Ombrophilous Forest area of Parque da Estadual Cantareira, São Paulo State, Brazil. After one year A. distichantha maintained 100% survival rate, when transplanted in terricolous and 83.33 % in epiphytic form, while W. cyathiformis was 60% for both relocation forms. We concluded that both bromeliad species could be simultaneously relocated as epiphytes or terricolous. Direct relocation to the ground guarantees practicality, as it is difficult to find trees with forks located at small heights from the ground in which the manual fixing of the plant could be done without equipment.

RESUMO A Mata Atlântica é um bioma constantemente ameaçado por perturbações antrópicas. A supressão da vegetação por obras rodoviárias ressalta a necessidade de projetos de conservação das espécies que nela ocorrem. O sucesso do resgate e realocação de plantas, como a palmeira Syagrus romanzoffiana pode contribuir para a conservação dessas espécies. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar o crescimento de mudas de S. romanzoffiana resgatadas de áreas de supressão da obra do Rodoanel Mário Covas - Trecho Norte e transplantadas em áreas naturais do Parque Estadual da Cantareira, São Paulo -SP. Foram obtidas medidas de altura, diâmetro do coleto, número de folhas e volume do torrão das mudas. O transplante foi realizado em três condições de luminosidade depois de separadas em três classes de volume de torrão e três classes de diâmetro do coleto. Foram avaliadas a porcentagem de sobrevivência, incremento em altura, diâmetro do coleto, número de folhas e pigmentos fotossintéticos após 4, 8 e 12 meses. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 3 x 3 x 3 (luminosidade x diâmetros do coleto x volumes do torrão) com três repetições de cinco plantas cada. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias comparadas entre si através do teste de Tukey (5%). A sobrevivência foi superior a 80% em todos os ambientes. Houve maior crescimento, principalmente quanto ao diâmetro do coleto, na clareira pequena. A quantificação de clorofila a, b e carotenoides mostrou maior teor para as plantas mantidas no sombreamento. Quanto à razão clorofila a/b, os resultados evidenciaram maiores valores nas plantas mantidas no sombreamento, com valores crescentes até os 12 meses. Pode-se concluir que S. romanzoffiana apresenta pouca restrição quanto ao ambiente de realocação, porém, com preferência às clareiras pequenas, sendo dispensável que sejam realocadas com torrão de porte grande.

ABSTRACT The Atlantic Forest is a biome constantly threatened by human disturbances. The suppression of vegetation by road works highlights the need for conservation projects for the species that occur there. The success of rescuing and relocating plants, such as the Syagrus romanzoffiana palm, can contribute to the conservation of these species. The objective of this work was to study the growth of S. romanzoffiana seedlings rescued from areas of suppression of the “Rodoanel Mário Covas” - North Section - and transplanted in natural areas of the Cantareira State Park, São Paulo, SP state. Measurements of height, stem diameter, number of leaves and clod volume of seedlings were obtained. The transplant was carried out in three light conditions after being separated into three clod volume classes and three crown diameter classes and observed for one year. The percentage of survival increase in height, crown diameter, number of leaves and photosynthetic pigments were evaluated. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 3 x 3 x 3 factorial scheme (luminosity x crown diameters x clod volumes) with three replications of five plants each. The data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance and the means compared to each other using the Tukey test (5%). Survival was over 80% in all environments. There was greater growth, mainly regarding the stem diameter, in the small clearing. The quantification of chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids, showed higher pigments content for plants kept in the shade. As for the chlorophyll a/b ratio, the results showed a greater relationship in plants kept in shade, with increasing values up to 12 months. It can then be concluded that S. romanzoffiana has little restriction on the relocation environment, but with preference for small clearings, and it is unnecessary that they are relocated with large clod.

Resumo A construção de rodovias causa diversos impactos no meio ambiente, incluindo a supressão da vegetação, que pode levar à redução da biodiversidade. Uma das possíveis medidas mitigadoras envolveria a realocação de plantas resgatadas para áreas protegidas e as orquídeas seriam uma das que possuem particular importância. Dentre as orquídeas, um exemplo poderia ser a espécie terrícola Sauroglossum nitidum. Visando otimizar a sobrevivência de S. nitidum após a realocação, o objetivo foi investigar se a fertilização aumentaria a sobrevivência desta orquídea. Para isso, foram separadas aleatoriamente cinco grupos contendo dez plantas, sendo cinco plantas submetidas à adubação foliar com NPK 10-52-10 (1 g.L-1), pulverizando cada planta com 1 mL do fertilizante e as outras cinco pulverizadas apenas com o mesmo volume de água destilada. Este tratamento foi repetido quinzenalmente por dois meses antes da realocação. As plantas foram realocadas em setembro de 2015 e monitoradas mensalmente até novembro de 2016. A sobrevivência das orquídeas foi de 92%. Além disso, observou-se que a floração foi significativamente maior em plantas fertilizadas. Em conclusão, recomenda-se a realocação de S. nitidum com prévia fertilização com NPK.

Abstract The construction of highways causes several impacts on the environment, including, the suppression of vegetation, which can lead to reduced biodiversity. One mitigating measure involves reallocating plant to protected areas and orchids might be important for this use. An example could be the terricolous orchid Sauroglossum nitidum. In an attempt to optimize the survival of S. nitidum following reallocation, the aim of this study was to investigate whether the fertilization can increase the survival of this orchid. For this, five lots with ten plants per lot were randomly separated, with five plants submitted to soluble fertilization with NPK 10-52-10 (1 g.L-1), spraying each plant with 1 mL of the fertilizer, and the other five sprayed with the same volume of distilled water. This treatment was repeated fortnightly for two months before reallocation. The plants were relocated in September 2015 and monitored monthly until November 2016. Overall orchid survival was 92%. Additionally, flowering was observed to be significantly higher in fertilized plants. In conclusion, reallocation of S. nitidum with previous NPK fertilization is recommended.

RESUMO Muitas barreiras são encontradas na produção de plântulas de espécies nativas dos trópicos, em grande parte devido ao desconhecimento de suas sementes. Entre elas, a falta de tecnologia para armazenamento prolongado de sementes recalcitrantes, que também pode ser um grande risco para a perda de importante diversidade vegetal. Neste trabalho, analisamos a tolerância à dessecação e a capacidade de armazenamento de sementes recalcitrantes de Myrcianthes pungens (O. Berg) D. Legrand. Os resultados mostraram que as sementes de M. pungens são intolerantes à dessecação de até 30% de água, são melhor armazenadas em baixas temperaturas e, sob altas temperaturas apresentam altas taxas de respiração e outros processos oxidativos.

ABSTRACT Many barriers are found in the production of plantlets of species native to the tropics, largely due to the lack of knowledge about their seeds. Among these, the lack of technology to long store of recalcitrant seeds can also be a great risk to the loss of important plant diversity. In this work we analyzed the desiccation tolerance and the storage capacity of recalcitrant seeds of Myrcianthes pungens (O. Berg) D. Legrand. The results showed that M. pungens seeds are intolerant to desiccation up to 30% water, are better stored under low temperatures and, under high temperatures, have high rates of respiration and other oxidative processes.

Resumo: O potencial para gerar novas raízes e até plantas inteiras, mesmo após a remoção de grande parte de suas reservas, é uma característica típica das sementes monoembriônicas de espécies do gênero Eugenia. Trabalhos anteriores mostraram que sementes de Eugenia podem produzir plântulas mesmo quando apenas ¼ de sua massa está presente, inclusive para sementes em estádios iniciais de maturação ou já em processo de germinação. Ecologicamente, esta poderia ser uma estratégia importante para garantir a propagação das espécies de Eugenia, uma vez que elas seriam capazes de produzir plântulas de forma seriada, a partir da mesma semente, dependendo das condições ambientais, mas isso ainda não foi estudado. Neste trabalho, sementes de E. candolleana de quatro fases de maturação foram cortadas longitudinal ou transversalmente e mantiveram altos percentuais de germinação e produção de plântulas normais. Em um segundo experimento, a primeira e segunda plântulas desenvolvidas foram removidas e a capacidade de regeneração também foi avaliada. Os resultados mostraram que foi possível obter mais de uma plântula de cada semente. Também evidenciaram que, mesmo após a remoção das raízes e das partes aéreas, foi possível a regeneração de novas raízes e plântulas. Essas características poderiam ser entendidas como estratégias evolutivas para garantir a propagação natural dessa espécie em ambiente inadequado.

Abstract: The potential to generate new roots and even whole plants even after the removal of most of their reserves is a typical characteristic of monoembryonic seeds of species of the genus Eugenia. Previous studies have shown that seeds of Eugenia can produce seedlings even with only ¼ of their mass, including seeds at the initial stages of maturity or seeds already in germination. This could be an important ecologically strategy for ensuring propagation of Eugenia species since they would be able to develop serial seedlings from the same seed, depending on environmental conditions, but this has not yet been evaluated. In this study, seeds of E. candolleana at four maturity stages were cut longitudinally or transversally, and they maintained high germination percentages and production of normal seedlings. In a second experiment, the first and second seedlings that developed were removed and regeneration capacity was also evaluated. The results showed that it was possible to obtain more than one normal seedling from each seed. They also showed that even after root and shoot removal, regeneration of new roots and seedlings occurred. These characteristics could be understood as evolutionary strategies to ensure natural propagation of this species in an unsuitable environment.

Este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar a germinação de sementes de Maclura tinctoria sob diferentes regimes térmicos e alterações decorrentes da presença e ausência de luz. As sementes foram obtidas em Rio Claro, Ajapi, Itirapina e Serra Negra, SP. Os resultados demonstraram que na presença de luz as sementes germinam em ampla faixa térmica (15 a 35 ºC) e apresentam melhor desempenho entre 20 e 30 ºC, sendo 30 ºC a temperatura ideal para a germinação. Na ausência de luz a germinação decresceu à medida que a temperatura diminuiu e a faixa térmica germinativa se estreitou, alterando também a temperatura ideal para a germinação, mostrando que as sementes de Maclura tinctoria necessitam de luz para expressar a taxa máxima de germinação.

This study aimed to characterize germination of Maclura tinctoria seeds under different thermal regimes and alterations due presence or absence of light. Seeds were collected in Rio Claro, Ajapi, Itirapina, and Serra Negra, São Paulo State, Brazil. The results demonstrated that, in presence of light, seeds germinate in a wide temperature range (15 to 35 ºC) and better perform between 20 and 30 ºC. The ideal temperature for seed germination was 30 ºC. In the absence of light, germination percentage decreased as the temperature diminished and germination temperature range was narrowed, changing the ideal temperature for germination, showing that the seeds of Maclura tinctoria require presence of light to express their maximum germination rate.
